The Jos Electricity Distribution Plc (JED), on Monday received accolade from residence in Jos and environs over improved electricity. Some residence in Jos who spoke to our correspondent stated that improvement in electricity distribution has contributed to increase in productivity, especially among service providers. In an interaction with the Public Relation Officer, JED Plc, Hajiya Lubabatu Rabiu, she posited that  a reliable provision of affordable electricity has the potential to tackle the symptoms and causes of poverty. Saying, that is why JED is leaving no stone unturned, in improving on its services to serve the public better.

Rabiu, reveled that the rapid improvement in electricity supply is as a result of the increase in magawatts from the National grid. She said, Nigeria has improved from 1,000 megawatts to 2,218 megawatts and out of this volume, JED got 5.5percent from the said total of 2,218 megawatts which translates to 130, megawatts, for its state of jurisdiction that covers Plateau, Bauchi, Benue and Gombe States.

She recalled that Nigerians has suffered for decades from the inadequate electricity service, from the government owned monopoly PHCN, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, commonly known by other names such as ‘Please have candle nearby’. she is also quoted saying that the cost of alternatives for power, which is mainly diesel generation, is at least four times the cost of a reliable power supply, saying that the reliable provision of affordable electricity has the potential to tackle both the symptoms and the causes of poverty.

“Electricity enables hospitals to function more efficiently and people to cook without suffering from wood-smoke pollution. It reduces CO2 emissions by removing the need for highly polluting diesel generators. Most importantly, it would remove the greatest obstacle to doing business in Nigeria and enable manufacturing and other industries to compete internationally”, she said. She however called on consumers to ensure prompt payment of their electricity bill to enable JED serve them better.
