The Association of Power Generation Companies, (APGC), said the total electricity generating capacity of the country’s seven generating firms, as at July 20, came to 7,856.52 megawatts.
However, it noted with disappointment that only 2,804 megawatts was accepted by the Distribution Companies, DISCOs, leading to the loss of about 4,991 megawatts during the period.
Speaking on the disturbing trend and how it was affecting players in the power sector, the Executive Secretary of the Association, Mrs. Joy Ogaji, speaking on the disturbing trend and how it was affecting players in the power sector told Vanguard that more often than not, the GENCOs had sufficient generated power available, without the capacity to transmit and distribute to the final consumers.
She said: “That is the scenario. That is the basic dilemma the industry faces.’’
According to her, the rule of the thumb for an industrial nation was about 1MW for every thousand of the population. This puts Nigeria’s energy needs to about 180,000MW range, given its population of about 180 million.
On the Federal Government’s target of 40,000MW by the year 2020, she said, “the issue is not about projecting the megawatts, but to put the right infrastructure in place first.
“We should also put other building blocks which go with generating the megawatts such as a firm, independent and knowledgeable regulator, a default proof payment plan, firm guarantees and incentives for investors.
“In summary, government should provide an enabling environment and avoiding interference, focusing on policies and giving direction,” She said.
Giving a breakdown of how the units were generated during the period, she noted that “Egbin generated 880mw during the period, only 201mw was sent out even as 679mw was stranded.
Others are, Transcorp, with a generating capacity of 529mw, sent out 280mw with 249mw stranded; Shiroro was said to have generated 450mw sent 412mw with little or no stranded power; Geregu generated 276mw which was stranded as nothing was sent-out during the period, while Kainji/Jebba generated 836mw sent-out 656mw had 170mw stranded.”
