Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) recently lost over 10 electricity transformers due to activities of vandals, the company’s Head of Communication Mr Emeka Ezeh, has said. Ezeh told newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday that the transformers were lost within the past two weeks.

He decried the spate of vandalism of transformers, saying the trend had become alarming in Enugu recently. He said that the company had replaced most of the faulty transformers. He added that the company was heavily burdened by the repairs and out-right replacement of most of the transformer. “The losses are huge on us. EEDC lost over 10 electricity transformers to vandals just in Enugu alone. “It cost the company a lot of money to repair few of the vandalised transformers and out-right replacement of many of the damaged transformers,’’ he said.

He appealed to Nigerians living in EEDC coverage areas to assist the company to protect electrical installation meant to serve them. Ezeh said: “we are working tirelessly to ensure constant power supply to all. “However, most of the shortfalls and complaints come from the activities of vandals, who deliberating put people in darkness by damaging our installations. “Any time you see anybody in your neighbourhood temper with electric cables, go near your transformer to temper with it; or remove its cable; its armoured cable and oil, please raise an alarm. “The person making such move might likely be a vandal trying to steal and damage your transformer and put everybody in the neighbourhood in darkness. “Although, these electrical installations are owned by EEDC, they are meant to serve the people and make their lives better. “EEDC is appealing that the protection of electrical installation should be a job for everyone so that we can improve our lives and businesses.’’
