The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has attributed the current poor electricity supply in Kano metropolis to inadequate allocation from the National Grid.
The company’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Mohamed Kandi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday.
He said the company was receiving an average of 200 megawatts for distribution to its customers in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states.
“The 200 megawatts we receive is grossly inadequate for our teeming customers in the states. This is the reason why we are finding it difficult to distribute the energy to the satisfaction of our customers,” he said.
According to him, the company has the capacity to take between 600 megawatts to 700 megawatts if given the opportunity to do so.
“The highest allocation the company has ever received at a point in time was 340 megawatts.
The KEDCO spokesman expressed concern over the attitude of some customers on pre-paid meters who by-passed the meters for their selfish interest.
“We are supposed to generate a lot of revenue from these customers but their fraudulent activities have made the company to lose a lot of revenue.
“The most painful thing is that some of the customers in the habit of by-passing our meters are big men,” he said.
He, however, disclosed that the Task Force Committee on Pre-paid Meter Monitoring (PPMM) would continue to go round the suspected areas to arrest the perpetrators.
He, therefore, called on customers especially in Kano to exercise patience as the company was doing its best to ensure improved power supply in the state.
NAN recalled that following series of complaints from some quarters, the state House of Assembly had summoned the KEDCO Managing Director, Dr Jamilu Gwamna.
